Today, we're the world's third largest retailer with over 6,200 stores and almost 520,000 employees. But our story started all the way back in 1919 when Mr Jack Cohen started a groceries stall in the East End of London. Five years later, Mr Cohen bought a shipment of tea from a Mr T. E Stockwell and by bringing their two names together, Tesco was born. Since then, we've come a long way to become one of Britain's greatest success stories. And it's all thanks to the way we work.
We start by getting to grips with the things that matter - to our customers, to our colleagues and to the communities in which we operate. Then we find a way to make those things better, together. Which is why we're always thinking ahead; why we're constantly innovating. Like developing everything from apps to online platforms, so people can shop with us anywhere, any time and in any way. But there's more to us than just convenience. We strive for every Tesco store to be valued by local customers, and to be known for doing the right thing in the communities they live in. Because we never forget that more often than not, it's the little things that are most important to them, and to our people.
It's for that reason that everything we do is still driven by our philosophy that 'Every Little Helps'. It's a simple way to capture what we're all about: doing seemingly small things that add up to make a big difference.
Tesco Information Technology is a fast-paced, creative environment where we constantly embrace change. For you, that means the chance to put your passion for technology to use in a way that will help us shape our business for years to come. We want you to challenge things. We want you to innovate. In doing so, you'll help us transform IT and Tesco and achieve our ambition to become the world's leading retailer.
